Brown-haired Maiden

This traditional air, with the familiar words "Horo, my nut-brown maiden" was the first tune I learned on the practice chanter around 1960. It is familiar to any Scot of my generation, probably as sung by Kenneth McKellar.

The music shown here is from the 1966 edition of Logan's Tutor, but I think it is the same setting which I learned at the start of my bagpiping career.  I can still remember being taught to play the throw on D in the first bar - agonisingly slowly - and wondering whether it would ever sound like the familiar song!

I now play this tune in reel time as part of a set of tunes for ceilidh dances such as the Gay Gordons.
